Public meeting to discuss proposed development at Riverside station

BH Normandy Riverside LLC will present revised plans to develop the property it leases at the MBTA’s Riverside Station at 7pm, Thursday, Oct. 6, in the Williams School auditorium, 141 Grove Street.

The meeting was scheduled in conjunction with the Riverside Station Neighborhood Coalition (RSNC) and the three aldermen elected for Ward 4. More information is available on the coalition’s website and at the city’s website.

The Clarks Companies Foundation hosts sixth annual yard sale

The Clarks Companies Foundation hosts its annual yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 156 Oak Street in Newton Upper Falls

The sale includes from furniture, books, kitchenware, appliances, and a lot of discounted Clarks shoes. The company expects well over 3,000 new pairs of shoes to be for sale at the event.

The yard sale benefits a non-profit charity created to pay tribute to Bill Bianchini, former senior vice president of product development, who died at age 55. The Foundation uses the funds to support an annual college scholarship program aimed at young people in the
Great Boston community in need of financial assistance.

What does ‘economic development’ mean for a mature city like Newton?

The term economic development is heard in wide range of public discussions about managing and planning for municipal services.  But what does economic development mean?

The League of Women Voters of Newton is sponsoring a presentation and discussion on the definition of this term, its implications for municipal finance and quality of life, and how it relates to other community goals.

The presentation will be given by Chris Steele, a Newton resident and board member of Newton Villages. Chris, a consultant specializing in corporate site selection and economic development, is an occasional visiting professor of regional economic development at UMass Boston and UMass Dartmouth.

The presentation and discussion will be held at 7:30pm on Thursday, Sept. 15, in Room 222 at City Hall. For more information, please contact the League at info@lwvnewton.org or 617-383-4598.

Public invited to discuss laws that shape development and use of commercial and residential land

The Newton Zoning Reform Group, appointed by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen, will hold a public workshop to present its work to date and solicit input and ideas from the public on the process and substance of Zoning Ordinance reform.

The workshop will be held from 7-9pm on Wednesday, July 27, in the War Memorial Hall at City Hall, 1000 Commonwealth Avenue.

The Zoning Ordinance shapes development in residential and commercial areas of the City, as well as for religious and educational uses. Based on the City’s new Comprehensive Plan, the Zoning Reform Group is studying the current Ordinance to identify parts in need of updating or clarification.

Newtonians from all walks of life are encouraged to attend and join the conversation.

Mayor hosts village coffee in Nonantum

Residents and business owners in Nonantum, Newton’s historically Italian neighborhood known as “The Lake,” are invited to meet with Mayor Setti Warren Thursday night for a “village coffee” discussion. The gathering will be held a 7pm at Pellegrini Field House, 11 Hawthorn Street.

Thursday’s event is part of a series of meetings held by the mayor. Earlier his year, he’s met with residents and business owners in Auburndale, West Newton, Newtonville and Newton Corner. Read an earlier post.

Newton Highlands Village Day: this Sunday!

Lincoln Street is transformed for one afternoon each year when Newton Highlands hosts its annual Village Day. This year’s event is scheduled to take place this Sunday with food and retail vendors, rides and entertainment.

Please mark your calendar and keep your fingers crossed for good weather. (It’s been a busy week or we would have posted a note on this event earlier.) And, if you would like to create an event in your neighborhood or village, please read this earlier post.
