Residents and business owners in Nonantum, Newton’s historically Italian neighborhood known as “The Lake,” are invited to meet with Mayor Setti Warren Thursday night for a “village coffee” discussion. The gathering will be held a 7pm at Pellegrini Field House, 11 Hawthorn Street.
Thursday’s event is part of a series of meetings held by the mayor. Earlier his year, he’s met with residents and business owners in Auburndale, West Newton, Newtonville and Newton Corner. Read an earlier post.

The North End comes to Nonantum
Nudo Gelateria opened at 308 Watertown Street in Nonantum earlier this month, and the restaurant received a nice writeup today on Newton Patch.
I can, from personal experience, recommend the melon gelato. When the mercury rises (on Sunday?), I’ll be back to try the frozen Italian lemonade (two scoops of sorbet blended with Aranciata or Limonata).
Hats off to chef and owner Andrew Tedeschi for his daring selection of flavors and for bringing some of the tastes of the North End to the Garden City.

Crosswalk safety: to sting or not to sting
School’s out and the weather is getting warmer (for New England, anyway), which leads to more pedestrians and bicyclists on our city streets.
Yesterday in Attleboro, police ran a crosswalk sting and stopped 47 cars in four hours — around one violator every five minutes, according to today’s article in The Sun Chronicle.
Police cited 16 of those drivers for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, a $200 fine. The same state law and fine apply here in Newton.
In May 2010, Newton police nabbed 48 drivers in crosswalk stings around the Garden City over a similar amount of time — about one violator every five minutes. (If people had as much luck fishing, we’d all be eating cod.)

Landscaping improvements continue around Newton Centre T Station
The following message was sent out by Louis D’Arienzo, one of the founders of the Garden City Preservation Society, an all-volunteer effort to beautify the area around the Newton Centre T Station.
Over the past year, with the help of local donors and Ward 6 Alderman-at-large Vicki Danberg, the group’s volunteers have added plantings and street furnishings to the area. [Read more →]

Sweet Potato Bistro to replace Peking Cuisine
Peking Cuisine at 870 Walnut Street in Four Corners has closed and workers are preparing the restaurant space for Sweet Potato Bistro.
No information yet on the proposed opening date, but menus are available outside. The menu features, among other things, “Taiwanese Tapas.” Also, the restaurant will be serving dim sum on weekends.

Inna Khitrik of Auburndale (pictured with son Alex) opened Inna’s Kitchen just a few weeks ago in May 2011. Inna’s Kitchen is a deli, café, and bakery offering Jewish cuisine from around the world. Specialties include falafel, knishes, borscht, corned beef, and many gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian options. They make everything we can from scratch using quality ingredients, including curing their own meat for corned beef and pastrami. A primary focus is making prepared food that is easy to take home and keep in the refrigerator or freezer, especially soups.
