Village Business Profile: International Walnut Market

International Walnut Market
20 Lincoln Street, Newton Highlands

International specialty store that features all foods from European to Middle Eastern to Asian, as well as a boutique line of beer and wine, with Persian rugs to boot!

Moe Khalaj, a Needham resident, established International Walnut Market in 2004.

What motivated you to get into business? I wanted to be self-employed, my own boss.

What is the biggest kick you get out of doing business in Newton? Here in Newton, I am one-of-a-kind.

Who inspires you? Not who, but what.  There are plenty of stores like mine in Montreal. I want to bring that flavor here.

What is your biggest business challenge? Getting as many people as possible to come to my store.

What do you know for sure? I am positive that my products are exclusive and unique, and I need to reach more people so they can see that.

What do you do when your well is empty/you need to recharge your batteries? Come up with new ideas.

What one piece of advice would you offer a new/prospective Newton business owner? BE UNIQUE!

What do you want your customers to know about you? We are warm and hospitable, as well as generous.

Your favorite stops in Newton? Angelo and Frank’s Barbershop

This is a lovely shop and the owner is a true treasure of the area. His liveliness and charm keep bringing me back to see what his newest finds for the palete have arrived. (I LOVE THE PASTRIES AND CHOC – I hope he keeps those coming in!)

I love this place. It’s great for lunch and amazing for Christmas gifts!

I saved the July 22, 2007 Boston Globe Article in People & Places by People writer Susan Chaityn Lebovits because I was curious and wanted to visit Walnut Market and see for myself which of my favorite foods I can find. It’s about time, don’t you think?
