| April 25, 2010 |
[UPDATE 4/2/2010: Online registration is open.]
Nearly a dozen of the projects planned for the city’s community service day will improve public spaces in our village centers. NewtonSERVES is coming up on April 25th — mark your calendars.
Some of the volunteer projects in village centers include:
Auburndale: At the Auburndale Community Library, volunteers will be cleaning and painting indoors and beautifying the grounds outside. A Business Recycling Project in behind The Village Bank will collect paper and cardboard from village merchants for recycling.
Newton Centre: The Garden City Preservation Society’s volunteers gardeners will be working to beautify the planting areas around the historic Newton Centre “T” Station.
Newton Corner: One group of volunteers will be cleaning and beautifying the grounds of Carleton Park (at Carleton and Pearl streets), and another group will be working on the grounds around the former Newton Corner Library, Chaffin Park, and the Peace Garden.
Newtonville: The Newton Senior Center will host a spring cleaning of its grounds and building. Newton Villages, in cooperation with the Newton Masonic Hall, is organizing a “spruce up” of the bus stop and corner part at Austin and Walnut streets (abutting the Shaw’s parking lot).
Waban: In Waban Square, volunteers will be mulching garden areas all around the village center and T station.
West Newton: The Newton Community Service Center will host a Business Recycling Project to collect paper and cardboard from village merchants, and volunteers will also be working to paint some of the hallways and classrooms. Newton Villages, in cooperation with Sweet Tomatoes, is organizing a “spruce Up” of the corner park at the corner of Washington and Watertown streets.
Online registration starts April 1st. For more information, see
